BioShock 2 Massively disappointing. The first was epic, this was mediocre. |
Commander Keen series All of them are great fun with a quirky art style. Just the right gameplay length too. |
Day of the Tentacle Possibly the best of Lucas Arts' point and click offerings. Though not as memorable as Monkey Island, it was more fun. |
Wing Commander: Privateer Open-ended space game, grab a ship, do missions, upgrade, and come back every now and again to continue the main storyline. One of the few games that gave me a inclining of a feeling for what it must be like to be in space. |
Silent Hill 5 Some great sections, but mostly a sign that game series die when you let Hollywood make a movie based on them. HD and better graphics didn't add anything to the series either. |
Silent Hill 4: The Room The concept caught me. One day you find yourself locked in your flat. The doors and Windows won't open, the phone and TV is broken, none of your neighbours seem to hear you screaming for their attention. |
Silent Hill 2 Yes, yes, a hundred times yes. Best game ever. Immaculate story and progression. Gives other game developers a good idea of how you can do new things with the art of story telling with this relatively new medium. |
Resident Evil 5 I watched the trailers with massive anticipation, and then was largely disappointed. I'm no expert reviewer, so I can't explain what was wrong, but the game just held very little of the appeal that RE4 did (for me). |
Resident Evil 4 I will never forget the long dark corridors of the castle level. Curtains billowed in a violent shrieking wind as groups of monks crept silently towards me, maces spinning around their heads. |
Super Mario Bros. 2 I really liked this one. The odd one out from the series. |
Halo: Combat Evolved Spent hours playing this co-op with my brother. And many more getting through Legendary. We couldn't quite get into the sequels in the same way, so I agree with James; the original and the best. |
The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time One of my all time favourites. I still remember the two weeks after Christmas where I did nothing but stay up all night drinking beer and playing this with my brother and step sister. We were unbelievably into it. |
Quake III Arena I played this with work mates for months every lunch and evening. Amazingly fun, but only when you are getting better at the same rate as everyone else. Extremely refined game balance. |
Plants vs. Zombies The designers had a great time making it, and you'll have a great time playing it. The iPhone version is best and cheapest. |
Doodle Jump I played it a few times, but it has limited replayability really. A steal for sixty pence of course. |

Geometry Wars: Retro Evolved 2 Grat pick up and play title. Made all the more awesome but the up front score boards that make it a great competition among friends. |
Viva Piñata I pick it up every so often. But let done by a slow UI for doing basic tasks so you end up feeling frustrated rather than thrilled. |
Borderlands Great fun, but such a horrendous ending to a well built story that I was disgusted. Still, great fun. |
Duke Nukem 3D I'm still eagerly anticipating Duke Nukem Forever. Crossing fingers the code gets sold to someone and finished. |
Colonization I still absent mindedly whistle the music from this game. Played it for hours. Loved it. Super recommended. |
Civilization IV I enjoyed becoming king of the world in just under 8 hours. |
GoldenEye 007 Somehow I multiplayed this game for almost two years. Can't recommend it anymore though. It doesn't stand the test of time. |
Half-Life 2 Probably the best game of the decade. Varied environments so you never got bored. Great story, compelling characters and a truly immersive ambience. |
Portal Great fun in gameplay and humour. Just the right length. I wish more games had such a consistently great 6 hours of gameplay. |
World of Goo Got samey. Most puzzles seem to be more about luck and perseverance than problem solving. |
Braid Best game of 2008. Innovative puzzles and gameplay mechanic. Intriguing background and "story". |
BioShock I had to play it through three times (and read a bunch of 20 page analyses) before I understood all the story, background and awesomeness. |
SimTower Steep learning curve, and too hard. Gameplay gets a bit tedious once you've got going. However I still loved building those towers. |
