PUZZLE BOBBLE Live! My second favourite game of all time, and one of the few I'm actually good at. Excellent Xbox port (Better than the Wii's version by a long way), but its still not the same as playing it in an arcade. |
Peggle Nights More of the same with barely any difference. Probably not worth it unless you fantasize about the Unicorn dude, he wears a kinky eye-mask in this version. |
Picross DS Fantastic puzzle game that I totally fail at when the grid gets really large. I love the multiplayer VS modes. |
1942 I mostly played this on my cousins Amstrad CPC 464. Still a treat when you can track down an old-school tabletop arcade machine with it on. |
SkiFree Oh my god I wasted so much time playing this. I'm going to look for an animated gif of the monster now, he was awesome. |
Gorillas I used to enjoy messing with the code for this, although a lot of the time I accidentally made the sun solid. |
Sonic Rush Very pretty and a return to form for Sonic. It's just too hard for my meagre platforming skills. |
Project Gotham Racing 4 Fairly decent yet totally unrealistic racer. Not as good as PGR2 sadly. |
Myst I don't have the patience for the puzzles in Myst, they take way too long to solve. That said, I loved wandering around and exploring the beautiful world. |
Quake Live Fun and with really awesome matchmaking. The install process that happens WHILE YOU ARE PLAYING THE GAME is really clever. That said, the whole browser-plugin thing is lame and a bit of a bitch to get working on Linux (So I play it on a Mac). |
The Incredible Machine "Open world" puzzle solving game that has too many restrictions for my liking. I want all the items all the time damn it! Good fun though. |
Samorost I spent a happy afternoon playing this when it was first released, the graphical style and gameplay are utterly enchanting. |
Puzzle Bobble This is right up there with Tetris on my list of all-time favourite games, it's also one of the few games I'm actually quite good at. |
Descent Hurrah for games that work best with joysticks. This will give you headaches in mere minutes, but it's worth it. |
Super Mario Land I am utterly rubbish at platformers, thus I never got very far with this and generally went back to Tetris. |
Super Smash Bros. Melee Brilliant party game, although you'll get pwned by people who know all the special moves. |
Carrier Command OH MY GOD I LOVE THIS GAME, it pretty much ate my weekends when I was young. Flying the Manta around is ace. Damn, I'm going to download this and play it in Dosbox now. |
Liero Real time worms basically, but with third party tools to create your own weapons. Incredibly awesome, but the game source code was lost by it's author leading to compatibility issues in newer windows versions. It seems there are clone projects now though. |
Worms 2 The introduction of the Holy Hand Grenade and a significant graphical upgrade. We used to get a group of us playing this after school almost every day. |
The 7th Guest I got this many years after release in a bargain bin. It's a bit shit. Play Myst instead. |
Wolfenstein 3D Wolfenstein 3D totally blew my mind the first time I saw it round at a friends house. |
Star Wars: X-Wing vs. TIE Fighter I think this was probably the last game I played using a joystick. Agreed with @julian on this being the best Star Wars game. |
Blobby Volley 2 There's totally a flash version of this now, no network play though. Tip: When serving bounce the ball BACKWARDS off the wall behind you and over the net, it puts most people off enough that they miss the serve. |
Lemmings I loved this game so much, but I think I most enjoyed packing all the lemmings between two blockers in a tiny space and 'sploding them all to see how deep the hole they blasted would be. Yay for 'sploding. |
Wipeout HD Fantastic visuals and an amazing soundtrack (But then this is wipeout, it ALWAYS has an amazing soundtrack). It's basically the reason to buy a PS3. |
Nexuiz Excellent Quake II based FPS with graphics upgrades designed for fast-paced multiplayer pwnage. Cross-platform and runs nicely on just about anything. |
Guitar Hero III Great fun, but I'm just a bit crap at rhythm music games. |
Grand Theft Auto I basically just loved getting loads of stars and standing on a bridge over a highway, watching the police run each other over. |
Command & Conquer Looks horribly dated these days, but at the time it was bliss. |
Quake II Railgun. Rocket Launcher. Win. The "Airquake" mod was loads of fun on a LAN too. |
Total Annihilation One of my favourite strategy games, the expansion packs are great fun. I spent many a weekend building up gigantic bases just for the hell of it. |
Dungeon Keeper 2 A worthy sequel with fantastic multiplayer, sadly it's a bit crashy on recent OS's. |
Unreal Tournament 2004 For my money Onslaught mode is one of the best LAN games ever. |
Mario Kart Wii They pretty much solved how to keep people playing online forever, IT JUST NEVER ENDS. That's not a bad thing, it's incredibly good fun - online play is slightly crippled (as with every Wii game) by the retarded friend-code-per-game system, but once you're past that it's excellent. |
Battlefield: Bad Company 2 Having only played on my own due to a total lack of friends who also want to play at odd hours of the night, I can't really recommend it. I'm holding it up to the "fun" standards of Battlefield 1943, and maybe there's my problem - I suspect this is a game designed to be played with friends. I'll come back to this on final release. |
Duke Nukem 3D Totally stood up to the test of time, despite repeatedly poor attempts at console ports. |
Defcon Superbly styled real-time Global Thermonuclear War simulator. Incredibly good fun to play with friends throughout a day. Good morning Professor Falken, would you like to play a game? |
GoldenEye 007 An excellent game spoiled by a controller totally unsuited to FPS'. That said any time I play split-screen four player deathmatch games it instantly takes me back to playing this with friends. A classic, but probably not one to bother with unless you must. |
Darwinia Against my expectations of the 360 port, this is actually really excellent and the controller scheme works rather well. Highly recommended retro-styled strategy fun. |
Halo Waypoint Rather daft "dashboard" for all Halo games. Maybe I missed the point. |
Tetris Still my all-time favorite game, one I never tire of. Push mode on Tetris DS was a lovely reinvention too. |
SimTower I spent many weekends playing this, I don't think I was very good at it though. |
Rez Fantastic "Music Shooting" game that sucks you in for hours at a time. |
Braid Beautiful brain teasing game with a lovely soundtrack, although the difficulty ramps up very quickly. (Read: I'm a bit shit at it) |
Ikaruga Absurdly difficult 2d shoot-em-up in a 3d environment, very pretty and a lot of fun for two players. I'm just crap at it. The dual-colour concept makes this a very interesting game. |
Death tank Like qBasic Gorillas, but with online multiplayer and power-ups. Also no Gorillas. |
Peggle Incredibly simple game mechanics leads to tetris-style addiction. The two player modes are quite fun too. |
1 vs 100 Fairly entertaining if you like quiz games, much more fun playing with people you know. The number of people playing at the same time is quite astonishing. Also it's free, so you can't really argue with that. |
Forza Motorsport 3 Utterly dull ultra-realistic motor racing game. Probably fun if you like F1 simulators and get your rocks off tweaking engine settings. |
'Splosion Man Fun for a while, but it's a bit too fast for me to handle. I do enjoy that every button on the controller except the stick makes him explode. Seemingly you can't reset the game to start playing from the beginning again, which is frustrating. |
Halo 3 I really only enjoy this in multiplayer or co-op modes, not a massive fan of the story mode. |
Battlefield 1943 The best pick-up-and-pwn-for-ten-minutes game on the Xbox by a long way. Astonishingly addictive. |
Super Mario Galaxy I would pay a sum of money to forget all about this game and play the first few hours through again. It's quite simply the most joyful I've felt playing video games in my entire life - my face hurt from grinning after the first play session. You've not lived until you've chased a rabbit around a small grassy moon. All that said, I HATE the platforming elements, specifically the "Sweet Sweet Galaxy" bonus level which for the life of me I can't complete. |
Left 4 Dead Only fun when played with other humans, the AI co-op players JUST WILL NOT DIE which removes all emotional attachment to them. That said, when played with friends it's incredibly good fun. |
World of Goo Another totally joyful game, but as soon as you get stuck it quickly loses appeal. |
Counter-Strike: Source While I haven't played :source as much as the original, this is still one of the most fun LAN games ever devised. |
Portal One of the most fun gaming experiences I've ever had. Also the only game I've actually completed in the last few years. |
