The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask

The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask My favourite game of all time.

The time-reset mechanic comes across as a bit annoying at first, and has little effect on the main plot but really shines for the side quests.

The limited 72 hour period means that Clocktown (the hub of the game) is perfectly packed with interesting characters and events. Each is scripted exactly for the timespan, rather than wandering in circles and spouting generic dialog they have specific roles to play. The limited timespan allows everything to be interweaved and polished to perfection.

Various side quests cause you to interfere and change the outcome of events but ultimately your efforts are undone at the end of the day. While this sounds rather depressing (it is, you can't help everyone in the same timeline, some quests event run at odds to each other) it also gives the game a very dark and "real" edge. By fat the most mature of the Zelda games it deals with some rather dark themes and the atmosphere matches it very well.

As with all Zelda games the music is utterly beautiful, especially the Orchestral versions.

I usually find myself in the minority but I still think this is one of the more daring and boundary pushing mainstream games in a long long time. Get it on your Wii, play it, get past the annoying start as a Shrub and ignore the main quests and meet the inhabitants of clock town.

  • jwheare jwheare I should really review this properly. I really can't overstate how much I appreciate being able to go back and do *everything* in a game without having to start completely from scratch.

Drop7

Drop7 Really addictive, simple game rules (match numbered blocks to height/width) ala Tetris, but gets complex with combo-effects, makes for some nice strategy.

Good for eating 10 minutes on a bus. I tend to prefer Hardcore mode as it moves a lot faster, regular games can take a while to get going.

Assassin's Creed II

Assassin's Creed II A massive improvement over the first game. The renaissance setting vibrant, colour and varied. Storyline missions are fun, but there's lots of entertaining (if not a little generic) side missions.

Combat is still a bit jerky and there's still not a proper "stealth" concept, ala Thief, but there's a much wider rage of weapons and new moves which make it more enjoyable.

Assassin's Creed

Assassin's Creed Fun but gets repetitive very quickly, lots of generic missions and not much variety between cities.
